Taxman to Use Debt Collection Agency
HM Revenue & Customs are to start referring debtors to a Debt Collection Agency under wider plans to improve it's collection rates of outstanding tax reports Credit Today.
The pilot scheme will involve HMR&C sending out letters before the end of May 09 to selected businesses and individuals warning that if they fail to contact the government department within a certain period of time, they will be referred to a Debt Collection Agency.
This will be a 6 month trial and the department will be working with just one agency. The agency will be permitted to write to and telephone late payers during the period of the trial but will not be permitted to visit people's homes or carry out any litigation work.
The trial has been launched in response to a report from the National Audit Office that recommended HMR&C explore alternative arrears management procedures.
